Useful things to know for sophomore year:
Driver’s Education: During sophomore year, students take a state-required driver’s ed course during gym in the first quarter. The course concludes with the state written test. When your student turns 16, use the card they receive (SAVE IT) to obtain a driver’s permit. Permit holders must complete six hours of driving with an instructor, which will be explained in class.
Financial Literacy: A required graduation course covering banking, budgeting, and bill paying. It’s offered as an in-school elective or online over the summer. Ensure your student discusses it with their guidance counselor.
Physical Education Independent Study: Beginning second quarter of sophomore year, students who participate in a Summit High School athletic program or in an approved outside athletic activity may apply to take advantage of PE Independent Study (commonly called “PE Exemption” or “PEX”). Have your student listen for details on eligibility, application procedures, and course requirements.
PTO Website: Please make sure you have registered on the PTO website. Here you will find the PTO-sponsored events calendar, the school directory, and the option to pay your PTO dues.
